A friend I met here in Austin recently asked for design suggestions for his kitchen, which has not been updated since he purchased the home many years ago. The space features white oak cabinetry and matching flooring; however, at the time of installation, he was unaware that the polyurethane finish would yellow over time.

He wanted to refresh the colors and materials while keeping the existing layout, granite countertops, and wallpaper. After discussing his preferences, I measured the kitchen, created a quick layout, took a few photos, and recreated the space in 20/20 design software.

The existing wallpaper includes subtle hints of red and green, which inspired me to select a rich berry tone for the painted cabinetry. To balance this, I incorporated a natural wood stain for a two-toned look, especially since his wife was hesitant to completely move away from wood cabinets. I also updated the backsplash to an off-white finish to help brighten the space, as it receives little to no natural light.
